The Urgent Care Medical Facility in Kelmscott provides essential health services, including a radiological clinic and urgent care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses, helping to ease pressure on nearby hospital emergency departments.
Auswide International Investments commissioned Hayley Smith to create a mural for the facility, as part of the Western Australia State Government Percent for Art Scheme, enhancing its ambiance and cultural significance.
Inspired by the nearby Banyowla Regional Park and Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre, Smith’s mural pays homage to the area’s natural beauty and wildlife conservation efforts, incorporating local flora and featuring the iconic black cockatoo.
Smith highlighted a black cockatoo in the design because of its association with the nearby Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Sanctuary. She chose to paint this iconic bird in blue to symbolise healing and restoration, which reflects the mission of both the new facility and the sanctuary.
Ultimately, the mural celebrates art, nature, and community, telling stories of conservation and resilience while enriching Kelmscott’s cultural landscape for both visitors and residents.
